As we cut down more and more of our dead ash trees @ 100 Acre Firewood I started to get really frustrated with all the clearing of brush(Mostly prickly ash and buckthorns) to even get to the base of the ash trees to cut them down.
Having the Bobcat T76 I knew there were options to look at. I started using our Skid Pro X4 Brush Cutter but you are left with a huge mess to cleanup and wood chip. The Skid Pro is good at grasses and smaller trees but can't tidy up area like a brush mulcher can.
I started talking to Jay from Jay's Forestry Equipment . He is a wealth of knowledge on this stuff and uses forestry equipment daily in his business. When I reached out to him he pointed me in the direction of Baumalight - I didn't even know this great Canadian company existed! After doing a bunch of research myself and talking with Jay we knew that Baumalight was going to be my best option for getting a brush mulcher that would work perfectly for our use case @ 100 Acre Firewood.
As luck would have it Baumalight has made a couple of amazing online tools that makes it easy for you to match your skid steer carrier to the perfect brush mulcher. First off Jay and I used the Hydraulic Flow & Pressure System Database to figure out the real world hydraulic flow of the Bobcat T76. Using this exhaustive tool that basically lists the flow of every skid steer and excavator out there it gives us this information:
So the GPM @ full load for the T76 with high-flow sits at 25.76 GPM. Using the Motor Option Calculator from Baumalight they pointed us toward MS572 with the C540 Bent Axis Piston Motor:
From there Jay ordered up the MS572-C540 and Baumalight had one in stock so it only took about 2 weeks for it is get to Jay and delivered to me. Unfortunately the skid steer that I had bought was sold as high flow but was actually standard flow - this was a bit of a pain because Jay and I had ordered the MS572 specifically for a T76 high flow carrier. After some scrambling around and working with the dealer that sold me the standard flow unit we changed skid steers to a high flow Bobcat T76 so that I could use the Baumalight MS572 to its full capacity.
The Brush Mulcher from Baumalight has become an indispensable tool for us @ 100 Acre Firewood. Being able to quickly and easily clear to the base of the Ash Trees makes the entire process safer and much more manageable. It also lets us clean-up long overdue areas of the farm that are consumed with Buck Thorns and Pickley Ash trees. A big thanks to Jay's Forestry Equipment and Baumalight for making life A LOT easier @ 100 Acre Firewood. A couple video of the MS572 in action:
