About a week ago Lorne from Bois à Feu Du Nord reached out about some cool online firewood tools that he has built. Bois à Feu Du Nord is a retail firewood company out of Pointe-Lebel Quebec on the shores of the St Lawrence River - close to Baie-Comeau.
Based on the tools that Lorne shared with me the folks in Pointe-Lebel are very serious about their firewood. Lorne and the crew at Bois à Feu Du Nord have put a lot of work into these tools and I found them super helpful and interesting.
Here is a quick run through of the 3 tools:
Firewood Calculator - this tool lets you enter in the size of your wood pile, type of wood, fireplace efficiency and wood moisture level. The tool will then output all kinds of info - volume, weight, BTU Output and equivalents for other types of heating. Great for working out the amount of wood that you have on hand and what the heating output is going to be.(IE - Do I have enough wood for the coming winter or not?)
Tree Firewood Volume Calculator - this one is super useful me in the woodlot - it allows you to enter the size of a tree and figure out what your firewood output is going to be. A great reminder of how many damn trees it takes for a bush cord of firewood! The volume calculator will also output BTUs and the other cool stuff that the firewood calculator does.
Firewood BTU Ratings - using this site will show you BTU ratings on over 100 different kinds firewood. A couple examples:
